Athena Diallo is a French photographer based between Paris and the French West Indies. Specialising in still life and portrait photography, she draws much of her inspiration from her Guadeloupean and Guinean origins. Proud of her roots, she approaches photography as an exploration of beauty and culture beyond the traditional Western gaze.
Trained at the Ecole Spéos, Athena discovered still life photography through her experiments with light and composition. This meticulous work, which highlights the subtlety of forms and textures, has become one of her major specialities, treated with great sensitivity. She sees each image as a living work, in which the light, the elements and the composition carry a profound meaning.
In her portraits and still lifes, Athena Diallo seeks to transcend simple visual representation. Her photography invites us to redefine the notion of beauty and to explore narratives of identity and culture through a personal and contemporary prism. Her aim is to shine a spotlight on communities of mixed Caribbean heritage, which are still under-represented, and to give them a fair place in the imagination of tomorrow.
